Reasons for picking Age of Consent

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Many readers will wonder why I chose, out of all the possible issues, Age of Consent to illustrate my point that America is not the world and actually exists within a bubble of illusion that it wishes to foist upon the world.

I have always been struck by the degree of American arrogance and the attitude that whatever we believe is right for the world and should be stringently forced upon it. I am a believer, to a degree, in situational ethics. I say degree, because I am aware of my own personal dichotomies.

A lot of that is because I tend to see the holes in things.

In view of the happenings at Livejournal that forced me to cease my postings there, I am well prepared to be called a pedophile for my beliefs.

Marie Antoinette was only 14 when she married the future king of France. My great grandmother was only 14 when she married my great grandfather.

The diarist, Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary that he had become concerned over the fact that the King's mistress was getting "long in the tooth." How old was she? 23.

In reading some of the letters that future American Civil War generals wrote at the age of 16 (Last of the Class: The goats of West Point), I am struck by the level of maturity those teenagers displayed.

Modern western teenagers live in a bubble of illusion. You hear a lot these days about how we need to allow children to be children more, when actually that is silly. childhood in western nations is frequently an artificial creation.

I do not want to persuade people to agree with me. I only wish to make you think. So frequently, what you are going to find in my rants has no conclusion and exists only as a loose grouping of facts.
